If you have completed a Master of Child Play Therapy* from a tertiary institute and hold an undergraduate degree in psychology, social work, occupational therapy, education, art therapy, music therapy, nursing, education or disability support we would be interested to hear from you.

* Students in their final year of the Master of Child Play Therapy at Deakin University who have completed their Humanistic placement are encouraged to apply.

Play Therapist- Fulltime/Part-time/Contractor

Job Description

The Registered Play Therapist plays an integral role for clients in understanding their referral reason, identifying valid and achievable goals, implementing singular or integrative modalities to support the child and creating an environment of nurture and safety to build their skills and capacity for best self.

  • The role of the Registered Play Therapist is to support Attach Therapy clients to achieve their goals by coordinating:
    Intake sessions with parents and/or carers.
  • Provide treatment for an array of mental health and/or disabilities using diverse play therapy models.
  • Developing tailored treatment plans according to individual client needs which are reviewed on a regular basis to ensure modalities are adjusted to meet changing needs of the child.
  • Connect with and build trusting enduring relationships with parents/carers, case workers, support coordinators, educators, and other allied health professionals.
  • Communicate professionally and with a respectful manner with all children, parents/carers and stakeholders.
  • Attend professional meetings and/or care team meetings are required.
  • Manage administrative tasks related to clients with the support of the administrative support person.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Uphold continuous professional development standards as dictated by the associated registration body.
  • Refer clients to external specialists and/or institutions when required.
  • Maintain detailed and comprehensive records of client sessions upholding best-practice, in depth case-analysis, self-reflection and legal subpoena.
  • Write progress and final therapeutic reports for NDIS, DFFH, Department of Education, or private clients as required.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, uphold high standards of privacy and confidentiality to preserve client information.
  • Connect with and work systemically with educational facilities, other health professionals, DFFH, NDIS support coordinators and community services.
  • Work independently at Attach and collaborate with other staff as required.
  • Uphold Attach Therapy’s vision and values in working as a team of master qualified play therapists.
  • Excellent time-management and organisational skills to manage client load.
  • Execute any additional reasonable task as requested by the Director.

The role is performed in a competitive market environment where client satisfaction, alongside service quality and outcomes is essential for client retention and attraction, and business sustainability.

Any changes to the role of the registered play therapist will be reflected within the individual employee contract.


Mandatory Qualifications

  • An employee Victorian Working with Children Check.
  • A satisfactory National and International (if required)
  • Police check.
  • Registration with APPTA.
  • A current Victorian Drivers License.
  • Proof to work in Australia if required.
  • NDIS Worker’s Screening Test.


Desirable Characteristics and Skills

  • Two years working therapeutically with children and parents/carers.
  • Membership with with IC-PTA.
  • Training in evidence-based parenting programs and capable of facilitating these programs (e.g., Circle of Security, Tuning into Kids).
  • Familiarity with Cliniko and/or Splose.
  • Excellent computer literacy and confidence and capability in using systems and technology
  • Ability to understand the NDIS Price Guide and line items.
  • Understand mainstream service systems including Child Protection and Department of Education.


Contractor Responsibilities

  • Hold or willing to obtain own ABN.
  • Current National Police Check.
  • Current Working with Children Check (WWCC) clearance.
  • Have or willing to obtain own public liability and professional indemnity insurance.
  • Organise and participate in own regular and ongoing supervision with a registered play therapist supervisor.
